How Social Media Has Shaped Generation Z
The first iPhone was released in 2007. I was just three years old when that groundbreaking piece of technology entered the world, which means that my entire life has been immersed in an era of rapidly advancing technology. In the coming years, social media platforms exploded onto the scene, growing at a mind-boggling pace. Fast-forward to today, and we can’t imagine a world without them. But social media, for all the fun and connection it brings, has also dramatically changed the way we view ourselves and others.
Generation Z, which includes those born roughly between 1997 and 2012, has had more exposure to social media than any other generation. From an early age, this generation has grown up in an environment where smartphones, tablets, and social media are everywhere. This has changed the traditional process of growing up which may not always be for the better. As I reflect on my own experiences and the shifts I’ve witnessed in how my generation interacts with the world, it’s clear that social media has both empowered and complicated the process of growing up. This generation’s relationship with technology has fundamentally altered the way we develop our identities and how we communicate with one another.
The Digital Landscape Gen Z Inherited With Social Media
By the time I was a teenager, the digital world had become my second home. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat have become a part of my everyday routine. It’s no surprise, then, that social media has influenced so many aspects of my life and the lives of those in my generation. According to McKinsey Health Institute’s 2022 Global Gen Z Survey, more than 42,000 respondents across 26 countries were asked about how technology and social media affect their mental health. The results were not too surprising. Gen Zers are more likely than other generations to report feeling negative emotions related to social media, with many citing it as a contributing factor to poor mental health.
The irony here of social media is that while these platforms are designed to foster connection, they often end up creating feelings of isolation and distress. Gen Z spends hours scrolling, swiping, and engaging with content, checking various apps multiple times a day. As a result, it’s become impossible to escape the constant barrage of curated content, making it difficult for many to maintain a healthy relationship with their in-person social lives.
The Dark Side of Social Media
Despite the obvious benefits, like staying in touch with friends or discovering new interests, social media also has a darker side that has affected the way Gen Z navigates the world. One of the most glaring issues is the pressure to conform to idealized beauty standards. Social media platforms have created a distorted reality that often centers on unattainable physical appearances, leading to negative body image issues, especially among young people. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, 70% of American teen girls believe that social media shapes their perception of the “ideal” body type. This influence, compounded by filters, Photoshop, and a never-ending stream of “perfect” images, has contributed to a rise in anxiety and self-esteem issues.
But the pressure to look a certain way isn’t just confined to physical appearance. Social media often promotes an idealized version of life itself. This is far from the reality most of us experience. Yet, as we scroll through our feeds, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison. The constant comparison to others can leave Gen Z feeling like their lives don’t measure up, which can lead to not feeling good enough and, in some cases, depression.
Cyberbullying has become another significant downside to the rise of social media. It’s one thing having to deal with bullying face-to-face; it’s another to have those hurtful comments follow you home. A study by Ditch the Label revealed that 37% of respondents between the ages of 12 and 20 reported experiencing online body shaming. Online body shaming is widespread and relentless, offering no relief from the endless stream of hurtful comments.
Looking on the Bright Side
Despite the numerous challenges social media presents, it’s important to recognize that these platforms also hold the potential for positive change. Social media has become a space for people to share experiences, find support, and raise awareness about important issues. It has provided a platform for all voices and has allowed people to connect with others who share similar struggles, providing a sense of community and belonging.
Social media can be a powerful tool for promoting mental health. Countless accounts, pages, and influencers are using their platforms to share positive messages and encourage self-care. Gen Z is using social media not just to connect, but to advocate for mental health awareness, creating spaces where people feel safe to express themselves and seek help.
Furthermore, technology has made mental health resources more accessible than ever. Online therapy, mental health apps, and support groups have opened up new avenues for those struggling to access traditional mental health care. While the digital world can sometimes feel overwhelming, it can also offer support when it’s needed most.
The Future of Social Media and Mental Health
As social media continues to evolve, so too will how we interact with it. The hope is that moving forward, we can create a digital environment that supports well-being, encourages genuine connections, and fosters self-expression in healthy ways. It’s time to shift the focus from perfection to authenticity. To create a culture that celebrates differences and diversity in all aspects of life.
Social media and Gen Z will always be tied together. It has become a defining part of the growing-up process. It’s shaped how we see ourselves, how we connect with others, and even how we deal with mental health. While it may have its downsides, there’s no denying that it has also opened up new opportunities for support and connection. Now, it’s up to us to use these tools responsibly and create a healthier, more inclusive digital world for the next generation.
